Swimming Level Designations

I know that both Camp Miller and Camp Hagan had strong aquatics programs. Can anyone help me remember what the different swimming level designations were? As I remember it, Hagan classified swimmers by the color of their caps. Is that correct? I also know that Miller classified swimmers with markings on their buddy tags. I believe the highest designation was "Tic Tac Toe". Any help in recalling each of the designations would be awesome.

How about you folks at Mini. Did you have swimming levels for the campers?

  • Red

    Black

    Red and Black

    Tic Tac Toe

Then you could have 1 or 2 stripes on the other side to show if you were certified for row boats and canoes.

  • Lewis-

I still have my beginners card from 1964 and intermediate card from 1966.  One is signed by John Howell and the other by

    Ralph Eberly Jr.

  • Hagan. I passed them all too. Was it the top two - one required swimming across the river and back, while the other included a long swim upstream and back with someone in a rowboat?

And of course who could ever forget "one, two, three; bubble, bubble, bubble"!

  • I remember receiving my WSI summer of 71. Had to run to the river from the CIT tents to save Connie from drowning in the middle of the river. I was quite proud of that accomplishment!
  • I recall in the mid-70's being able to get into the "wharf rats" which was sort of a special ops team of a few swimmers. We found keys dropped off a canoe by a counselor. Also untangled a marker buoy that was submerged because it got wrapped around a branch -- that kind of thing. This could have been a name that was made up by someone for just that summer.

  • Missing one: White Advanced

White Star (white colored cap)—American Red Cross Beginner

    White Cap—ARC Advanced Beginner

    Red Cap—ARC Intermediate

    Yellow Cap—ARC Swimmer

    Blue Cap—ARC Advanced Swimmer

Green Cap—Camp Hagan award for an extraordinary swimmer (rarely awarded)

White caps swam in the first shallow area, red caps in the middle area, yellow and blue in the outer area between the rafts.

  • Blue cap had to swim across the river to NJ and back in a straight line.  Green cap had to swim upstream to the wires and back.
